| In this study we have investigated the analgesic action of the fentanyl patch on electroencephalogram (EEG) arousal response for tooth pulp stimulation pain in rabbits. The conscious animal was put into a testing box placed in a dark sound-proofed room, and the voltage threshold at which the EEG arousal response occurred was measured. Fentanyl patch (2.5 mg) caused a long-lasting (3 – 72 hours after application) increase in the voltage threshold, which was index of obvious analgesic effect. The rate of rise in the voltage threshold in the fentanyl patch group ranged from 154.2 to 204.2% at 3 – 72 hours after application, which was significantly higher than the value before application. These results of present study suggested that the fentanyl patch might be especially useful for the chronic pain in the human patients. |
